Jesse was married to Charlotte Hively when he began living with Kit Harper, but he had lived with her and had children with her before his marriage. (Divorce was difficult and uncommon. In Virginia before the civil war, it required an act of
the legislature.) Jesse Hinkle was very prominent and held many positions. He was said to be the best-looking man in the county, and was at one time quite wealthy. Both he and Kit were respected in the community. Apparently, since divorce was
difficult, such arrangements were acceptable, as they are today in some Catholic countries.--Henckel Genealogical Bulletin.
[7836] 1850 census for Pendleton County, North Fork, aged 67.
[7837] Jesse Hinkle was Sheriff of Pendleton County from 1822 to 1824.
[7838] He was a captain in the 46th Virginia Regiment in the War of 1812 and a colonel in the Mexican War.
