[93] The following is from Frank and Em's daughter, Sandy:
[95]
Emma's grandparents were James M. Calloway, born May 16, 1863. He grew to manhood on the family farm. He married Emmeline Brooks of N.C. They were happily married for 39 years. They were laid to rest in St. John, Ks. James and Emmeline (whom
Emma's named after) came with Emma's parents and five other children from Tennessee in a covered wagon. The other five children arrived after they settled in Kansas.
[96]
In 1957, Em returned to Lakin, Ks. from Canada. She would remain there until her death in 1984. When Em returned to the states, she helped take care of her mother until Mamie Walker's death in July 10, 1958. After her mother's death, Em
would:fix up the old house her dad had built in the 30's, and she would live there until her death in June of 1984.
[97]
Emma went into partnership with her sister, Bertha. Together they owned and operated restaurants, The Phillips 66 Café and The Red Crown Cafe ( for a while they had them both at the same time.) Later a new Red Crown was built east of the old
one They moved back to the 66 for a short time while getting the Downtown care ready to open. They fed the people of Kearney County over 21 years. The girls retired, but Em went back to work after a short time for another 5 years.
[98] There is a bound book by Sandy Musgrove Lane in the Kearney County Museum about the restaurants in Kearney County. There is a piece about Emma, and some on her grandson and his wife, Chuck and Dana, as they continue in the restaurant business.
