Ellen was just a little girl when her mother died, and, while it was bad for all her brothers and sisters, it was almost a tragedy for her. She went to live with her maternal grandparents and lived a tranquil, happy life with them. When she
returned to her father's house after he remarried, things changed. She was not used to the rougher life, and her father's new wife was jealous of her mother, at one time piercing her only picture of her mother repeatedly with an ice-pick. She
was bright and rebellious, unhappy at home, sometimes unhappy at school.
[4]
Life was hard for her, but there were bright spots. She enjoyed parts of World War II. She had a good job, an active social life, and increasing self-esteem. After the war, she married Jim O'Keefe, an army veteran who was severely damaged by
the war, both physically and mentally. The marriage didn't last.
[5]
Later, she worked for her brother Pierce in Wichita, Kansas, was able to buy a home, and was happy. When he suddenly died in 1960, her world fell apart, essentially forever. Happiness from then on was mostly from nieces and nephews and her
cats, which were always with her.
[6] She died from cancer, colon cancer that spread throughout her body.
